We left Phillip Island heading east planning to spend time in Gippsland before heading on up the NSW coast.
We went first to Venus Bay planning to overnight there but it was a pretty ordinary place with unexciting sand dunes between the town and the beach and no visible redeeming features.
The road east from here winds inland over hills a few hundred metres high and the views inland are quite remarkable. The land here is very fertile and the rainfall is obviously high and regular resulting in lush green fields.
Just before Foster, the road crosses to the seaward side of the hills and suddenly one has a view from the escarpment of Wilsons Promontory, a wild mountainous large National Park almost surrounded by sea. We decided not to visit the Prom as the weather promised a fairly miserable time
We stopped overnight at a little place called Toora nestled in the side of the hills and looking out towards the Prom.
The field next to the caravan park had horses, a donkey and highland cattle and the caravan park itself had lots of birds. Among them was an obviously orphaned magpie which decided that I was a suitable substitute for the absent parents and which demanded to be fed every time I appeared.
