Rather than retrace our route to Bega, we headed for Canberra.

The road is only about 80 kilometres (50 miles) long but we saw 10 kangaroos dead by the side of the road. We usually see none or one in this length of road.

There are three hypotheses.

1. The population density of kangaroo in the Monaro is much higher than elsewhere.

2. The traffic density on this road is much higher than elsewhere.

3. The drivers o this road at night are totally stupid or totally careless.

I don't accept hypothesis 2.

We had lunch at the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. We saw no emu but there were many grey kangaroo in the open park.

The wetland lakes are being upgraded with a new boardwalk so the bottom two lakes had been drained. All the birds, mostly Sacred Ibis, were congregated on the top lake which made for some amusing viewing from the bird hide with so many birds competing for so little space.

I never realised that ibis are not swimmers. They will do almost anything to avoid falling in the water. I suspect that they are the wrong shape for swimming and would risk turning turtle if the tried to float.
