Heading north on the New England Highway, we stopped at Guyra to see the Mother of Ducks Lagoon. There were an amazing number of birds in residence which perhaps demonstrates how important wetlands are to the conservation of birds. We watched Whiskered Terns, sometimes at very close range, hunting over the reed beds and the grass of the golf course. These birds are unusual with the ability to hover which seems unlikely for a sea bird. We also watched Masked Lapwings, Eurasian Coots, Black-winged Stilts, Grey and White-faced Herons, Egrets and Black Swans.

In Glen Innes we visited the Celtic Standing Stones, a stone circle, based loosely on one in the Scottish highlands, erected fairly recently on a hill above the town to celebrate the contribution of celts of all persuasions to the development of New England and . It was surprising to discover that each stone had a sponsor. One, indeed, had been paid for by the Clan Cameron in Australia.

We stayed in the Craigieburn Caravan Park which is unique because it is set among gigantic granite boulders. These provide a degree of privacy for the campers and make for a very pleasant ambience
