Heading for Mount Isa, we passed through Kynuna which is notable only for two things. Firstly, it has a roadhouse, a motel and a Waltzing Matilda Museum and not much else. Secondly, it is home to a Mr MaGoffin who claims to be the Waltzing Matilda expert and who lived in Winton until a few years ago. Presumably, he fell out with everyone else in Winton and took his bat and ball to Kynuna.
We were somewhat Waltzing Matilda'd out and as there was nothing else there we lunched and drove on.
Kynuna does have one other remarkable characteristic. It is the watershed between the rivers of the Channel country which all flow south into lake Eyre, the Diamantina rises around here, and the rivers of the Gulf country which all flow north into the Gulf of Carpentaria.
McKinlay, the next town is much bigger than Kynuna. It has a Police Station. The caravan park belongs to the pub and, after a little talk about self contained motorhomes, I was offered a site for $5 a night rather than the usual $14. We made up for this by eating in the pub at prices which wouldn't have been unusual in Brisbane.
This pub is notable because it is used in the Crocodile Dundee movies. Indeed the crew had recently shot the pub scenes for CDIII.
In the morning we saw a mare with a new born foal being nervously watched over by the publican and his wife as it was having trouble suckling. I have some nice pictures but can't put them up because the iBook is a bit broken.
