Darling Downs Drifters Chapter Meeting

Friday 24th

At last the trailer is finished! There is a small problem. The car is too far forward on the trailer and we need to modify the tie-down points but that can't happen until next week. I'll drive it as it is to Cooyar and back to see if there are any other problems.

I arrived in good order at Cooyar and met up with the Darling Downs Drifters and their visitors from several other chapters, about twelve vehicles in all. Even here where I had no reason to know anybody, there was someone I had met before.

We had a convivial happy hour and repaired to the pub for dinner. The service wasn't lightning fast but most people enjoyed their meal. One serving, which took the best part of an hour to come, was stone cold and came back from the kitchen luke warm.

The telephone doesn't work here so I can't call Thetford.

Saturday 25th

I spent a good deal of time just chatting. I did fix the new flagpole and hoisted the Homeless network flag for the first time. I also move a lot of stuff into the new locker on the trailer. I'll have to organise it a bit better so that I can get at things more easily. sadly, there doesn't seem to be room for a new ladder.

In the afternoon the local Progress Association held a platypus awareness sausage sizzle. The local Queensland National Parks and Wildlife guy spoke about the platypus and its habitat.

Afterwards, we all went down to the creek to look for platypus. There were five sightings, one 10 minute long.

The town plans to develop the park as a bit of a tourist attraction with a board walk and viewing platform. It should be nice when its finished. The park is already popular with free campers and one hopes that the development won't attract a bad element.

Sunday 26th

I was up at sparrowfart and walked the length of both creeks on platypus watch. No luck with the platypus but I had a chat with the local artist who does a platypus survey every morning for the QNPWS guy.

The afternoon saw the weather break with a thunderstorm just about happy hour time. At least the rain has done some good washing the Little Motley and the trailer.
