We had decided that we wanted to get to Broome before the Bettisons leave there so, needing to make some significant progress to the west, we set off to see how far we can get in a day.
The scenery was not at all what I had expected. The highway takes a curve to the south apparently around the Kimberley while the Gibb River Road ( which is 1000 km of gravel and definitely contra-indicated for the Motley) is the "tourist" route and my expectation was that we would skirt round the scenic bits. In the event the highway rolls gently along a valley between most imposing ranges which are an ever present source of interest. Its a long way between towns but the journey is anything but boring.
We made it past Warmun to Spring Creek which is just over 250 km (150 miles) from Kununurra. In the rest area we met a couple of homeless nomads who sold their house and left Dunedoo in NSW two years ago. They are from Bradford in Yorkshire and migrated to Oz in 1969 so we have much in common with them. They have a deadline of 4th December as do we but whereas we are going to Ceduna for the eclipse, they are going to Esperance for the wedding of the son of their oldest friends, most of whom they haven't seen for years, just as we went to Tobago in 1998. We chatted with them until after dark.
