The coastal drive, which is the highlight of a visit to Esperance, has to be one of the best in Australia. It is only short but the road provides exceptional views of the rugged coast and the Great Southern Ocean.
We stopped at Twilight Beach a very pretty little swimming spot protected from the ocean by some big rocks which form a little sheltered bay of the cleanest water and the whitest sand you could wish to see. Of course, you'd have to be mad to swim in it because of the temperature but it looks exceptionally inviting.
We also visited Observatory Point which commemorates the visit by two French ships, the Esperance and the Recherche which anchored in the lee of Observatory Island during their exploration of this coast in 1792. The view from the lookout is stunning.
We stayed on another day because I had toothache and had to see a doctor to get a scrip for an antibiotic.
