We had done all the things we needed to do in Port Pirie so we took to the road again.
I decided that we should go up the Lower Flinders Ranges Tourist Drive to the east of the mountains which rise up to the west of Port Pirie We had been advised to stop at Wirrabara to sample the best pies in Australia at the Old Bakery.
We decided to eat in and were served by a lovely lady from Northumberland who told us that her mother still complains about her "colonial" accent.
The pies were indeed wonderful; large, full of meat, with beautifully light pastry and with a delicious flavour.
I asked her how such a business could survive in such a small, out-of-the-way town and she told us that they were having a hard time keeping up with the demand. They do not advertise. Several tour operators have taken to visiting on every trip and they have been featured in many newspapers and such. I asked several of the customers how they came to be there and they all said that they had, like us, been told about the place by friends.
We continued on our way north, stopping occasionally to check out camping spots and finally stopped at Horrocks Pass, a well known rest area a bit off the road at the top of the pass between the valley we had been in all day and the gulf.
The weather had turned suddenly to full on summer so we took an afternoon siesta in the airconditioned comfort of the Motley.
In the evening we were joined by another motorhome. It turned out to be a German vehicle which had been imported to Australia by its owners who had taken a holiday tour, returned to Germany to take care of some work commitments leaving the motorhome here, come back to finish their trip and were preparing to return the vehicle to Germany to avoid paying import duty.
