The safari took to the road again for a spot of free camping prior to going into Townsville.
First stop was Macrossan Park which is only 25 km from Charters Towers on the banks of the Burdekin River.
This is one of the most primitive camping areas with no mown grass and only basic toilet facilities but the river is pretty and there were birds to watch. We spent some time observing a pair of Nankeen Kestrel hunting over the thick grass in the late afternoon.
We were pretty crowded, parked in line beside the road down to the river, but the weather was good and happy hour is happy hour.
