Heading for Mount Beauty in the Kiewa River valley and Bright in the Ovens River valley which are both said to be stunning in the autumn, we took a short leg to Tallangatta.

On the way we passed the carcass of a huge wombat on the side of the road. It must have been 1.2 metres (4 ft) long and certainly much bigger than any one has seen in captivity.

Tallangatta is a planned town on the banks of the Hume reservoir and like all planned towns it seems to lack some indefinable quality which makes real towns real.

photo of Lake Hume The caravan park is on the shores of the lake. There are all the features of a lake, a high water mark, a retaining wall and signs for swimming and boating areas. Unfortunately there is no water. Well there is a bit of a creek where the Mitta Mitta River dribbles by. The lake bed has sizeable trees so it seems that it is some years since the lake was full.
