We left Cobar planning to stop in one of the three free camp sites on the road to Wilcannia.

The countryside is in such good condition that Jean remarked that it was as though we were driving through a park. Mulga trees, all of similar height, line the road and form a strange English kind of avenue but with native trees.

Later on we met a farmer who had just bought property round here and he told us that the rain has been good all year and that they have had 70 mm (3 inches) in the last month.

I had remarked in my diary last time we came this way that the recent flood had caused the land to be in unusual condition and that we should check it out in more normal times. We have yet to see it in dry times.

We checked out all the rest areas along the road and finally settled on McCullochs Range which is a very well developed place just to the south of Wilcannia. It has everything one could want plus a childrens playground. It is very popular with all kind of travellers including an enormous low-loader which was carrying a twenty ton mine support diesel tanker. We found a quiet level corner and parked up for the night.
