Barraba is an historic country town situated on the headwaters of the Manilla River in the North West Slopes of New South Wales, Australia.

It was established in the middle of the nineteenth century and has been through many changes since then.

It presently has a population of about 1200 people many of whom have been in the town all their lives and many are from families which have been in the town for several generations. There are folk who have settled in Barraba recently because it is such a beautiful, friendly, and comfortable place.

Barraba is embarking on a Transition Initiative under the umbrella of the Transition Network, a worldwide charity located in Totnes, UK, dedicated to the support of local Transitions Initiatives everywhere.

Transition Initiatives are designed to mobilize the collective genius of the community to put in place solutions to the future problems facing the community arising from Peak Oil and Climate Change.

The organizing committee doesn't necessarily have the answers to the problems that face the town but we do have the technology to facilitate the committed members of the community in working through the problems to find locally realistic solutions.

Those solutions will form the basis of the Energy Descent Pathway, a blueprint for the changes the town will need to make in the future to become resilient and sustainable in the face of Peak Oil and Climate Change.

We have formed an Unincorporated Not-for-Profit Association to prosecute the Transition Initiative.

We are offering membership of the Association to all who are keen to see the Transition succeed. To join just contact us.

The Organisation has been recognized by the Transition Network as an official Transition Town. We are the 13th official Transition Town in Australia and the 144th in the world.
